The Top Fat Loss Plans for Flat Six-Pack Abs and a Lean Stomach
A meeting with Mike Geary – Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer
I had the pleasure of being interviewed recently by a fitness specialist from NYC, Certified Personal Trainer, Geovanni Derice. The interview is below and I think you’re going to enjoy it… I reveal some of the hardest hitting approaches to eliminate that stubborn belly fat to locate those horizontal six pack abs that everyone wants.
“GD: Welcome Mike to our 4-ever-Toned Fitness Journal. For men and women that do not know you, please tell us a few things about yourself and how you can help our readers with their wellness and fitness.
MG: Thank you for having me, Geo. Well, to go back a little, I have been heavily involved in sports and fitness for around 20 years now, ever since I was a teenager. Being involved in sports in high school got me interested in strength training and conditioning.
Now, once I started feeling more energetic, getting more powerful, and looking better, I was instantly hooked for life. I’m 36 now and still hooked on how living a healthy and fit lifestyle makes me feel energetic, confident, strong, and youthful on daily basis.
I chose earlier in my 20’s I wanted to make the commitment to assist different individuals have the excitement of becoming healthy and getting in the best shape of their lives, especially because we’ve reached an epidemic of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, etc.. That’s the reason I became a fitness expert. It only gives me so much pride to help others, who have fought for a long time to get in wonderful shape, and show them it can be attained, and it can be fun at the process.
I have expanded through time from only reaching local people with personal training, into being able to help people around the world reach their fitness goals with the assortment of the net. I only hope that my enthusiasm for fitness motivates people to do it and improve how they look and feel for life.
GD: Now Mike, there’s so many things out there concerning what works and what does not work… if you had to choose 3 items that work again and again to discover horizontal lean abs, what would they be?
MG: The first and most important point to get control of in order to reduce your belly fat and get flat abs is cleaning up your diet. Exercise is important, but your diet is king when it comes to losing body fat so that you can see your abs.
There’s so much confusion now about what a healthy diet that promotes fat loss is… after all, we are bombarded with conflicting messages from the media about what is healthy and what is not, and you have all these gimmicky diet books about low carb, low fat, high protein, vegetarian, fasting, atkins, south beach, liquid diets, and much more. There’s so much conflicting info, the average consumer doesn’t even know where to start when it comes to eating for fat loss.
The next thing that works time and time again, would be to focus on the intensity of your workouts and focus on working the body as a whole to have the ability to get the best metabolic response to lose that stubborn belly fat.
So as to really become lean, the workouts should have a high intensity, with short rest periods, working the largest muscle groups of the human body, as opposed to attempting to isolate particular modest muscles like the biceps, triceps, or calves.
For the next thing, let us talk about actually training the abs particularly. When it comes to training the abs, if you want real results, I suggest forgetting about the crunches and situps for the most part. They’re ok for somebody who is really deconditioned, but most people who already have some training under their belt require a good deal greater stimulation for their abs than crunches. Crunches are among the abs exercises that actually provide the least amount of resistance, and keep in mind that resistance is what develops and tones the muscles.
I provide a good deal of great abs exercises in my book, but one of the utmost resistance exercises for your abs, is hanging leg raises (but NOT how that you see lots of people at the gym doing them). The key to doing these and really working the hell out of your abs is to curl your pelvis up as you lift your legs. Almost nobody does this right. To tell the truth, almost all individuals can not do this originally, but I furnish some recommendations in my book about how to progress to doing these correctly.
GD: What are people doing wrong when it comes to creating the coveted”6 pack abs”?
MG: Well Geo, I know this sounds funny to most people, but the principal thing people do wrong to get those flat 6-pack abs is… are you ready for this?
They spend entirely too much time focusing on training their abs ! WAY too much time spent on abs exercises. Sounds crazy, but it’s true.
Remember, having a flat and visible six pack of abs is all about getting down to a very low body fat percentage. So as to do so, your workouts will need to concentrate on sparking a fat burning hormonal environment in your body, and increasing your metabolic rate. That just does not happen when you focus a whole lot of time training a muscle group like the abs.
Instead, you should use most your time focusing on training the largest muscle groups of the body like the thighs, back, and chest. That’s what stimulates your metabolism and the fat burning hormones that will get you lean and sporting a degree sixxer!
GD: Which exercises will be the best exercises that individuals need to do if they are to get maximum defintion with their midsection?
MG: When it comes to producing the abs, I refer to some sorts of dangling abs exercises, along with some amazing floor abs exercises like lying leg thrusts (all described and illustrated in my book).
However, maximum definition in the abs and waist stems from losing bodyfat, and the exercises featured in my program for this purpose are various sorts of swings and snatches (unique dumbbell or kettlebell exercises that virtually nobody does in regular exercise centers ), squats, deadlifts, lunges, step-ups, presses & clean, mountain climbers, sprinting, and other full body exercises and calisthenics. If you want great looking flat abs, focus on those instead of focusing so much on training the abs directly!
GD: When it comes to diet Mike, individuals have tried countless strategies to get 1 thing… and that is fat loss. What recommendations have you used to successfully help your clients eliminate body fat and keep it off?
MG: I have included a fully complete discussion of the topic in my book, which accounts for almost half of this book, but I will try to generate some great simple generalizations to get people started on the perfect route immediately. The main issue is that your diet is as natural and unprocessed as possible. It almost always comes back to the overprocessing of food that makes it unhealthy, which makes it completely wreck your metabolism and hormone balance in your system.
By means of example, why eat refined grains, the moment you’re ready to eat sprouted whole grains (remember that I usually recommend strictly limiting grain-based foods entire for the best results because of problems with antinutrients and gluten in grains which are inflammatory).
Why eat processed sugarwhen you can get natural sources of sugars from a high nutrient whole food like fruit. Why eat highly processed, refined, and hydrogenated vegetable oils (these are THE worst thing in the modern diet), when you can consume natural sources of healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, fish, eggs, coconut milk, organically raised beef, etc..
The purpose isn’t to fall for some gimmick like exceptionally low carbs (although I do believe in a somewhat reduced carb intake since is a significant problem for most people), very low fat, super high protein, or any other combination which has you focusing on a single macronutrient vs. another.
Your body needs all macronutrients to flourish and get many different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.. Trying to cut an entire food group out functions contrary to what your body needs. I get into far more detail about this incredibly important topic towards losing body fat (especially that stubborn belly fat) for life in my book.
GD: Thank you very much Mike for sharing with us all of this amazing information.
